Fit education

Measure the garment that already fits.

Tag sizes drift across decades, makers, and alterations. The safest comparison is between our measurements and a similar garment you already wear comfortably.

Jackets

01

Button the jacket, lay it flat, and smooth it without stretching.

Chest
Straight across from the bottom of one armhole to the other, then compare that number—not a doubled chest circumference.
Shoulders
Seam to seam across the back, following the natural curve at the top.
Sleeve
From the shoulder seam to the end of the cuff along the outside edge.
Back length
From the bottom of the collar seam to the bottom of the jacket.

Shirts

02

Fasten the shirt and lay it flat with the back facing up for collar and shoulder measurements.

Collar
Inside the collar from the center of the button to the far edge of the buttonhole.
Chest
Pit to pit with the fabric resting naturally.
Sleeve
Shoulder seam to cuff. If measuring from center back, note that method separately.
Length
Bottom of the collar seam to the longest point of the shirttail.

Trousers

03

Fasten the waistband and align the front and back rises before measuring.

Waist
Across the aligned waistband. Double this flat measurement for circumference.
Rise
Crotch seam to the top of the front waistband.
Thigh
Across the leg approximately one inch below the crotch.
Inseam
Crotch seam to hem along the inside leg.

Shoes

04

Marked size is the starting point. Last shape and width matter just as much.

Marked size
Record the complete size and width exactly as stamped.
Outsole length
Heel to toe along the longest point of the sole.
Outsole width
Across the widest point of the forefoot.
Fit reference
Compare against a shoe from the same maker or last when possible.
